THE STUDIO - 1979 - The main level floor (75 ft. x 75 ft.) floats out over the hill. The floor was finally constructed 3 years after the poles had been set. At this phase it was a real piece of sculpture. I'm standing next to the largest pole - 45 ft. tall - and thinking, "Let's leave this as is and build the studio a few acres over." It was a slow, but enjoyable process, juggling between full-time teaching, and the many commissions. I found myself working for the University, working for the Client, and working for the Hill. Originally the concept for the studio was a gigantic pyramid, with four major laminated beams from each outside corner to the apex of a pyramidal skylight. The cost of the "glue lams" prohibited the original concept and reverted to a contained space sitting on the platform.
